I love chunky yarns for winter scarves. I wrote the Caledonia Chunky Scarf pattern to be a free crochet scarf pattern with a lot of texture instead of all one uniform flat type of stitch. Texture is a good thing! It’s long enough to wrap around your neck a few times and looks both luxurious and comfy. Keep reading below for the free crochet scarf pattern.
I recently took a walk through Caledonia State Park (PA) and although we are late in the winter, and not far off from spring, the wind was gusting more than I had hoped it would, even though the day was sunny. It made me think of how I needed to write up a thick and chunky crochet scarf pattern that I could wrap around me and that would go well with plenty of clothes in my wardrobe. I had some Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn in my yarn stash that I had initially bought for another project. It’s a super bulky weight yarn (6) and made of 80% acrylic and 20% wool. I knew it would be perfect for the scarf I had in mind. So I wrote this free crochet scarf pattern that can be done fairly easily, even by less advanced crocheters.
An ad-free downloadable / printable version of this pattern is available in my Etsy shop…. HERE. If you choose to purchase the paid version, just know that I appreciate your support so much!!
You Will Need…
- 2 Skeins of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn in the color Oatmeal
- a 10mm (size N) crochet hook
- scissors
- darning needle
Stitches & Abbreviations
- Sk – skip
- St/Sts – Stitch/stitches
- Ch – chain
- SC – Single Crochet
- HDC – Half Double Crochet
- HDC 3rd LO – Half Double Crochet in 3rd Loop Only. Instead of inserting hook under the V like normal, or under only front or back loop, you will insert hook from underneath the 3rd loop (located below one side of the top parts of the V) and upwards through the loop. See photo below.
- Crossed HDC – Consists of a set of two
stitches, crossed over each other. To do this, skip 1 stitch, crochet into the next, then go back and crochet into the skipped stitch, over top the front ofstitch , or go behind stitch when indicated.
Notes
The turning chain always counts as a SC or HDC stitch in the row.
When following directions for 1st st in a row, you will actually be inserting hook through the second stitch opening because the first one is directly under turning ch, which counts as a stitch.
Gauge
The gauge is not important for this particular free crochet scarf pattern so it will not matter much if your scarf is a half inch or an inch different in length. Just try not to crochet too tightly because it will take away from the more textured look.
***This pattern is written in USA crochet terms.

Row 8 Repeat Row 4 exactly, except ch 2 instead of 1 at end of
Row 9 HDC all the way across
Row 10 SC in 3rd LO all the way across
Adding Fringe: To add fringe, cut pieces of the same chunky yarn twice the length that you want your fringe to be but you can also trim them down once finished. Fold them over in half and attach them to bottom of the scarf at the middle where it is folded over. I used 8 pieces folded over for each end of my scarf. So it was 16 equal length pieces of yarn needed for the fringe. (See picture below)

I hope you enjoyed making this free crochet scarf pattern.
